They come in round necked or square necked varieties. The square necked resonator guitar is used more as a lap steel guitar and can only be used in this way. Out of all the steel guitars, this is the easiest one to learn on. Even still, go to a professional for lessons. If you are determined to try and learn by yourself take it slow. Lap steel guitars are traditionally acoustic guitars, but do come with pickups for amplification. They originate from the Spanish guitars, which were customized by lifting the head and the head nut. It has six strings. There are some guitars, especially those made by Weissonborn, that have a double six-string neck. Therefore if you would like to learn this guitar, it is best to go to people who have had experience in these particular guitars.
The console steel is electric in nature, and is otherwise known as the "table steel guitar." It is a variation of the lap steel. You tune this guitar using the necks, as it does not have pedals. It comes with amplification as a standard, usually has several necks, and was one of the first guitars to have up to eight strings on each neck. This makes this guitar incredibly difficult to learn to play. This guitar is used mainly in Hawaiian music.
A pedal steel guitar is also an electric guitar; and it can have up to three necks. There are as many as eight pedals on the guitar--this number excludes the volume pedal. It can even have as many as eight knee levers. Therefore this is the most difficult guitar to play. This guitar is featured mostly in country music. Additional strings and pedals give this guitar more flexibility than the other guitars, but you have to know what you are doing in order to play this guitar. Concentration is the key to learning this guitar.
Of all the different guitars to learn, this is by far one of the most difficult. Not only to you have to learn how to play it, you must also learn how to tune it properly with all the pedals and strings. This guitar is defiantly not for the faint hearted.
