Learn to Play Guitar
Last Updated: March 13, 2010
Playing guitar for yourself, your family, and your friends can be a lot of fun – if you’re good at it.

But up until recently it was also pretty expensive to learn - a highly-qualified teacher can cost more than $100 per hour. Even lesser-qualified teachers charge as much as $50 per hour.

Luckily, the internet has given us a variety of guitar learning programs, which show you how to teach yourself – in the privacy of your own home, and with no music knowledge required.

We decided to review these programs - our key criteria were fast learning, ease-of-use, and a variety of learning levels.

Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with the results - these programs do work, and if you pick the right one you could be playing some of your favorite songs with just a few hours of practice.

We reviewed 5 guitar learning programs - only 3 met our criteria:

  • Fast Learning - improves your skills in a matter of hours, not months
  • Easy to Use - quick to get started and doesn't require any music background
  • Good for All Levels - helpful lessons for all levels of guitar players
Our Choice  Jamorama

"The best guitar learning program in 2010..."

This program works for any age or experience level, although it is marketed more towards the novice guitar player. Its focus is on acoustic guitar, although the lessons and principles will also help out electric guitar players.

With 150+ video lessons this program has plenty of content to keep even experienced musicians busy for quite awhile.

These video lessons are backed up by ebooks, jam tracks, and a variety of bonuses (including a couple of helpful pieces of software).

But the real question is, how well does it work?

Those with no music knowledge at all can be up and playing in less than 30 minutes.

The lessons are all done in a very simple and easy to understand format. There isn’t a lot of fluff or useless technical terms like we saw in some other programs.

The quality of instruction is very good, and the way the lessons are arranged makes learning as simple as possible. If you are really motivated to learn you could probably go through 3 or 4 lessons in one day, which would mean you would be a pretty good guitar player in about 6 weeks.

But the great thing is that you can go through the lessons at your own pace, however fast or slow you like. This allows you to do a lesson one day and then take the next day off, or review the previous lesson.

The only downside to this program is that if you already have some experience playing guitar it takes a little while to find the correct lesson to begin with. Beginners obviously won’t have this problem since they can just start with the first lesson.

Overall the quality of this program is far beyond any other that we tested, and it's a great value at less than $50.

The Verdict: Easy to use for all levels; cheap price; 60-day money-back guarantee; the best program we have seen - our top pick

2. Guitar Super Stars

Our second pick offers you a wide variety of guitar learning materials. As with our top pick we were impressed by how easy it was to get up and running quickly.

This program also comes with some cool bonuses like the GSS Jam Machine, which is basically a track sequencer that allows you to add in drums and other instruments to the guitar tracks that you play.

However, while this program is helpful for beginners, most people will quickly outgrow the lessons in this package.

Guitar Super Stars just does not have the huge number of lessons that Jamorama does. And while the training material is helpful, it doesn’t give you a comprehensive program like our top choice.

In summary, this software is ok for beginners, but most will go through the lessons and be left wanting more.

3. Adult Guitar Lessons

Adult Guitar Lessons is our third and final choice. While this program is marketed towards adults, there is no reason that anyone at any age can’t use it.

This program offers nearly everything that is in the top two products, but the quality and layout leave much to be desired.

There is a lot of good information here, but it’s not put into a user-friendly format for the beginner. Intermediate and advanced players will get a lot of helpful tips from this program though.

Overall this is a solid program, but it just doesn’t live up to the standards of our top pick.
